Marsha’s First Career: Protecting Children from Abuse and Neglect
Marsha began her career as a child abuse investigator for the Department of Children and Families in 1998. The skills and knowledge gained as an investigator led her to a position with Arnold Palmer Hospital working for their Child Protection Team in 2001. There she was trained extensively in diagnostics and forensics of child abuse and neglect. Marsha was specifically trained as a forensic interviewer of children and testified as an expert witness on behalf of child victims in dependency and criminal proceedings. Marsha worked collaboratively with local and federal law enforcement agencies as well as State Attorneys’ Offices for several jurisdictions. Marsha also coordinated trainings, policies, and educational courses on specific areas of abuse and neglect with local leading hospitals to include Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Nemours Children’s Hospital, and Florida Hospital. Marsha’s high level of expertise garnered high praise from her peers in the child protection profession and from professionals in the legal, medical, and law enforcement fields. Marsha’s knowledge and relationships built in this specialized area are invaluable.
In 2006-2013, Marsha advanced into supervisory and management positions. There she trained and educated other professionals entering the field and presented at national conferences on child abuse and neglect. Marsha led the Child Protection Team for Orange and Osceola Counties, and was an Assistant Manager for the Orange County Children’s Advocacy Center.
Marsha maintained her position and work load as a child protective professional while attending law school. While a law student, Marsha trained students in the FAMU Guardian ad Litem program and as a Certified Legal Intern she represented clients in foreclosures and other housing issues.
Marsha worked as an attorney for Children’s Legal Services (CLS). In that position she was in court daily, working to ensure child safety and family preservation. Marsha’s CLS experience included high-profile and complex dependency litigation, including actions terminating parental rights (TPR).
